Africa-Press – South-Africa. Gauteng police shot and killed four suspected would-be hijackers and wounded two others during a high-speed chase in Glen Austin, Midrand, on Wednesday morning.
The group was allegedly about to rob a truck carrying electronic devices.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said officers received intelligence of a truck that would be hijacked around Midrand.
“The information was operationalised wherein the identified suspects’ vehicles were noticed on Olifantsfontein Road in Glen Austin,” Mogale said.
She said when the team arrived at the scene, the gang, who realised they were about to be pounced upon, fired shots.
A high-speed chase ensued.
Mogale said: “Four suspects were fatally wounded, and two others arrested in the shootout. ”
“Two unlicensed firearms were recovered on the scene, and the four vehicles used by the suspects had questionable origins which are under investigation,” Mogale said.
She said the suspects would appear in court soon.
