Africa-Press – South-Africa. An alleged Ekurhuleni serial rapist was positively identified by 17 rape complainants in an ID parade on Monday, according to Daveyton Magistrate’s Court prosecutor, Terence Marx.
The accused is a married, part-time law student at a Gauteng university.
Dressed in a striped T-shirt and blue sweatpants, he winked at his wife and relatives who were in the public gallery.
He responded in English to Magistrate Vinny Gobind, despite an interpreter’s attempts to assist him in isiZulu.
“Seventeen victims positively identified the accused. The State is ready to oppose bail should the accused intend to bring an application,” Marx said on Tuesday.
Gobind postponed the case to allow the accused to consult with his Legal Aid attorney.
The accused was arrested on 23 January in Putfontein, where he allegedly attempted to convince two women, separately, to travel with him.
The Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority’s Lumka Mahanjana said: “It is alleged that the accused raped two women on different occasions. It is alleged that on 14 January, he offered a lift to a woman who was going to work.
“When the complainant refused, he allegedly pointed… a firearm [at her], forcing her to get into the car. He drove away with her to Putfontein, where he allegedly raped her.”
Mahanjana added that on 23 October 2022, the accused allegedly met with another complainant who was on her way home. He allegedly forced her into his car, drove away and raped her.
She said the accused was employed as a security officer at Prasa.
News24 understands that rape cases were reported in Putfontein, Tembisa, Daveyton and Benoni in Ekurhuleni.
It is alleged that the accused went on a rape spree in Tembisa in 2018 and that his youngest victims were 14 and 15.
He allegedly offered women a lift before producing a firearm, ordering them to undress and raping them inside his vehicle. Some victims were raped more than twice.
The case returns to court on 27 February.
