Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Cape Town man accused of murdering a Bellville South granny in 2021 will only go on trial in 2024, the Western Cape High Court heard on Friday.
The court heard that, unless a slot became available sooner, he would have to wait in prison until next year for his trial to start.
Cynthia Doubell, 93, was found raped and murdered on her bed on 1 August 2021.
Earlier in the case, Netwerk24 reported the accused was the son of her grandson’s girlfriend.
The couple lived in the house with the granny, and the couple’s other young son. The man arrived one night when they were out, when the granny asked for a glass of water. He wondered why his little brother couldn’t do it. They started arguing, and this allegedly led to the fatal attack.
The prosecutor, Maria Marshall, told Judge Matthew Francis on Friday that there was talk of a “backlog court”, but since this had not been finalised, she would look out for an earlier date.
The man was sent back to prison to await trial, which is set for 24 January.
