Africa-Press – South-Africa. Police arrested four men on Thursday for allegedly gunning down a witness outside the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town more than a week ago.
The woman, whose name is known to News24, was shot dead after she allegedly finished testifying in a criminal case on 25 May.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said the woman was walking in the vicinity of Church and Brodie Roads, which are near to the court building, when an unknown gunman shot her.
Pojie said the woman was on her way to a taxi rank when she was shot.
“Four [men], aged between 24 and 33, have been arrested and charged with murder,” he said, adding that police also seized a silver Nissan Tiìˆda and cellphones.
News24 previously reported that a court staffer said people had sought shelter after a white Nissan sedan pulled up and fired shots at the woman.
The man said:
The four men who were arrested are scheduled to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, did not respond to News24’s request for comment at the time of publication.
Meanwhile, MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Reagen Allen welcomed the arrests.
“No person deserves to die in such a horrific manner,” he said.
According to the MEC, police informed him that various locations were visited, which led to the successful apprehension of the men.
“This heartless killing has been making the rounds on social media, and I am pleased that SAPS acted in such a swift manner,” Allen added.
Video clips of the shooting have been shared on social media, but the MEC warned against the distribution of the footage.
“Rather, hand it over to SAPS so that it can be added to their body of evidence. It is important now that the individuals make a court appearance, as we do not want suspects to manoeuvre their way out of cases due to technicalities in court,” the MEC said.
