Africa-Press – South-Africa. Gauteng police recovered stolen copper plates worth R6 million in Ekurhuleni on Thursday.
Spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the copper plates were transported in a truck that was hijacked at De Hoek Toll Plaza in the Free State.
He added a private security company, and the Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence Trio Task Team were immediately alerted and chased the suspects.
He added the pair would be charged with possession of suspected stolen property and a hijacked trailer, saying the police were looking for more suspects.
On Monday, the police recovered food items and explosives looted during a service delivery protest in Diepkloof, Soweto.
Masondo said the police retrieved most of the stolen items and opened a case of public violence.
He added protesters looted two trucks travelling on the N1.
One truck transported grocery and the other, explosives.
He said the police’s explosives unit confirmed the explosives were dangerous and needed to be removed from the community.
“The information we have for now is that these are commercial explosives used in the mines. We suspect that the community was not aware because from a distance they look like polony.
“They thought it was polony, only to find out they were dangerous explosives.”
