Africa-Press – South-Africa. The City of Johannesburg is set to launch a mega awareness campaign to alert households to use water sparingly as supply challenges escalate.

The province is faced with a severe water shortage issue, which could see households spending the festive season with dry taps.

The metro said Johannesburg used more than 1,700 megalitres of water daily, which was significantly higher than what it’s meant to supply.

Speaking at a media briefing in Brixton on Thursday, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said a new reservoir was being built to relieve Johannesburg Water’s systems.

“So, we are adding extra litres to be able to supply this whole area. So, this reservoir also gives an opportunity when there are interruptions that we will have at least 48 hours with enough supply of water even if there are disruptions.”
