Gauteng Premier Lesufi to introduce new by-laws regulating spaza shops

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Gauteng residents will on Sunday learn about new by-laws regulating spaza shops, as authorities respond to a rise in deadly food poisoning cases.

In recent weeks, dozens of people, mostly children, have died after eating contaminated food allegedly purchased from spaza shops.

The sometimes fatal incidents have spurred the government to strengthen efforts to address the crisis and find solutions.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi will outline the by-laws and regulations for spaza shop operations.

He will meet with executive council members, municipal leaders and department heads to coordinate a provincial response.

Lesufi said these tragic incidents require urgent, collaborative action at government, business and community levels.

He is set to brief the media at the Sci-Bno Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg.
