Africa-Press – South-Africa. Government’s new Integrated Resources Plan (IRP 2025) will see South Africa getting more than half of it’s energy needs from renewable and nuclear sources within the next 15 years.
That was revealed by electricity and energy minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa during a briefing on Sunday.
A R2.23 trillion budget will be spent on overhauling the country’s energy generation capabilities, which includes a bold plan to double power capacity by 2039.
South Africa aims to add 105 000MW of generation capacity within the next 15 years.
Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, energy expert Ruse Moleshe says says there’s a strong focus on renewables, gas, and nuclear to drive economic growth and industrialisation.
“Indeed there’s a significant change in direction towards cleaner technologies. Infrastructure is a long-term game. You have to plan well ahead of time,” says Moleshe.
“There’s a large role that the private sector is playing, and that the private sector will continue to play, but the majority of that is in the renewable energy sector”, adds Moleshe.
