MK Party rejects DA's motion of no confidence against Lesufi

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party in Gauteng says it will not support the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s proposed motion of no confidence against premier Panyaza Lesufi.

Last week, the DA announced its intent to remove Lesufi from his post following a damning report by the Public Protector against the provincial government.

The report found the Gauteng crime prevention wardens, nicknamed ‘AmaPanyaza’, were irregularly established with no legal mandate to do any police work.

The MK Party in Gauteng said it cannot punish Lesufi for trying to fight crime.

The party’s caucus leader in the provincial legislature, Thabang Nkani, says the MKP doesn’t feel Lesufi should lose his job over the Public Protector’s report.

“There may have been problems before the seventh administration. We came as the MK, we are participating with them in all committees. We showed them our stance and we can’t support anything that is opportunistic.”

This is another blow for the DA’s motion as ActionSA says it cannot pledge its support for it until the DA has secured the votes of the MK and Economic Freedom Fighters caucuses.

ActionSA said the DA must also apologise to Gauteng residents for voting in Lesufi as premier when it thought it was going to be in a coalition with the African National Congress.
