Africa-Press – South-Africa. Suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu has begun laying the foundation to support his decision for the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Mchunu appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday for only two hours.
In a bid to adhere to a tight schedule, evidence leaders allowed him to read through his pre-prepared statement.
Mchunu stuck to his story, echoing much of what he told Parliament’s ad hoc committee.
He believes the PKTT was not a permanent structure and was duplicating the work of the murder and robbery unit.
“The initial mandate of the NPKTT was for actually six months and not six years, six months.”
He claims the task team was irregular in terms of the Public Finance Management Act, in that regular assessments of their performance were not submitted since 2022.
“Budget had to be found from other programmes, even during extensions to fund it. It had to be subjected to regular assessments, and costs had to be calculated each time there had to be an extension.”
Mchunu will return to the commission on Thursday and Friday for cross-examination.
