ANC in Parly wants parties to urgently elect chairpersons to lead portfolio committees

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Parliament has still not elected chairpersons of committees that will hold President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 75-member executive to account.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament wants parties to move with speed and urgently elect chairpersons to lead parliamentary portfolio committees.

Parliament has still not elected chairpersons of committees that will hold President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 75-member executive to account.

The election was initially set for Friday in the published parliamentary programme.

Meanwhile, the likes of ActionSA have put forward their own members to be considered as chairpersons of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) in the National Assembly and in three other provinces.

The ANC caucus said the party, led by its Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli, would engage members of the Government of National Unity (GNU) to appoint chairpersons and whips as a matter of urgency.

The party said this needed to happen to get the assembly and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) back to work following the swearing-in of Cabinet and the executive this week.

There are other key positions in the National Assembly and NCOP that remain vacant, like the National Assembly chair of chairs and deputy chairperson of the NCOP.

These are expected to be finalised in the coming week if parties are able to agree on who should lead the 30 portfolio committees in the National Assembly.
