ANC Promises Intervention in Underperforming Municipalities

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The African National Congress (ANC)’s national leadership has promised “intervention” in some of the country’s underperforming municipalities where its members are deployed.

Thousands of ANC councillors from across the country have gathered at the FNB Stadium in Soweto after the party issued a roll call of all its public representatives in municipalities.

The councillors are expected to give a progress report of the municipalities they are deployed at and receive an action plan from the party’s leadership.

The Goldrush Dome at the FNB Stadium is overflowing with ANC councillors from across the country.

The ANC has more than 4,900 elected public representatives in local government – the most of any political party.

The party’s secretary general, Fikile Mbalula, said some of their deployed members have not been performing to the required standard.

“Firing or not firing will depend on the reports that we have got and the evaluation we have done, in terms of our councillors. I wouldn’t want to call it firing, but intervention. There will be intervention, you will see, in most of the municipalities that are underperforming.”

The ANC’s councillor roll call comes with just about a year before this political term ends and there are fresh local government elections.
