Batohi Calls for Confronting Systemic Justice Challenges

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Shamila Batohi said that it’s time for the country to confront its systemic challenges across the entire criminal justice system.

She said without an overhaul of the criminal justice system, efforts to rebuild the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will not yield the desired results.

Batohi has called for solid and reliable Crime Intelligence, as well as a judiciary that is prepared to decisively deal with the delaying tactics in court.

Batohi also pointed to the growing attacks on investigators, lawyers, prosecutors and whistleblowers, saying their murders and intimidation underscored the urgent need for stronger protection measures.

She welcomed the work of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, saying it was opportunity to implement meaningful reforms across the justice system.

“If there is rot within the NPA, we want that to be addressed. All the rot within the criminal justice system must be dealt with once and for all.”

Marking her last day in office Batohi, said she is leaving behind an NPA that is more resilient and independent.
