Africa-Press – South-Africa. All roads lead to Newlands on Boxing Day (26 December), as the highly-anticipated fourth season of the Betway SA20 tournament kicks off.
The League will get underway with the first of 26 matches between reigning champions MI Cape Town and Durban’s Super Giants, at Newlands on Friday.
Cricket commentator Jeremy Fredericks explains that the tournament has become a highlight of the South African cricket calendar, a testament to the hard work and innovative thinking by the organisers.
“Unfortunately, we are not going to see any New Year’s Test and Boxing Day Test, but the fourth edition of the SA20 is a great filler for the holiday period.”
He adds that, “any team can come in on the day and win this tournament, so we’ve got some strong sides with some great squads.”
The tournament regularly hosts sold-out crowds and a strong following among fans.
Fredericks highlights the unique aspects, such as its punchy format and presence of exciting young players. It has also given cricket in South Africa a major boost.
“It’s a month, it’s punchy, and there are a lot of exciting things happening for spectators. Already, the tickets are sold out at Newlands for Boxing Day, which just shows you how the tournament has grown over the years,” he says.
