Africa-Press – South-Africa. After a weekend to forget at the Toulouse Sevens last week, the Blitzboks bounced back in London with a breathless 26-19 win over top-seeds Argentina.
Dewald Human opened the scoring for South Africa after he took a brilliant line to take a pop pass from a ruck to cruise over from 25 metres out.
Ronald Brown added the conversion as the Blitzboks opened up a 7-0 lead after four minutes.
Argentina struck back almost immediately with some impressive play of their own as Tobias Wade scored a converted try to tie things up at 7-7 after seven minutes.
Some individual brilliance from Muller du Plessis gave the Blitzboks a 14-7 lead as he spotted space in behind the Puma defence, kicked ahead, collected and scored a converted try.
Neil Powell’s men couldn’t have started the second half any better as James Murphy scored an unconverted try for a 19-7 lead after Argentina failed to control the kick-off.
The ebb and flow of the match continued as Argentina worked space for flyer Marcos Moneta and he cruised to a converted try, making the score 19-14 in favour of the Blitzboks.
A mistake straight from the restart saw Argentina score again, this time through German Schulz, as the scores were tied at 19-19 with four minutes left.
Angelo Davids put the South Africa back in the lead, again employing the space behind the Argentinian defence to kick into, collect and score an a converted try as the Blitzboks extended their lead to 26-19.
Despite the Pumas having all the possession in the final minutes, the Blitzboks defence held out to secure a vital win.
Their next match on Saturday is against Ireland and kicksoff at 14.22.
