Bogus security guard who stole R3m from bank gets 15 years behind bars

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A North West man was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in connection with a 2018 incident in which he and an accomplice made off with R3 million when they went to a Klerksdorp bank and pretended to be security officials.

The Stilfontein Regional Court sentenced Welcome Marcus, 55, on Tuesday.

Giving details about the crime, North West Hawks spokesperson Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said: “On 11 April 2018, the accused and his accomplice were dressed in security uniforms when they went into a Nedbank branch [in] Anderson Street and indicated that they were there to collect money. They then collected an amount of R3 million and left the bank.”

“It was only after they had left that the bank officials realised that the pair were bogus security officials.”

The Hawks launched an investigation which led to the arrest of Marcus and another man in Johannesburg on 13 May 2018.

“They made their first appearance in court, facing charges of theft, and were each released on R30 000 bail. The case was later dropped against the second accused while Marcus made several court appearances until he was ultimately convicted,” Rikhotso said.

Provincial Hawks head Major General Patrick Mbotho lauded investigators and the National Prosecuting Authority for their work.
