Africa-Press – South-Africa. Former Proteas coach Mark Boucher and superstar batter AB de Villiers are among the star-studded 16-strong team for the inaugural SA20.
The SA20 will get underway on Tuesday, 10 January at Newlands Cricket Ground for a Western Cape derby, which sees MI Cape Town hosting Paarl Royals.
The inaugural season of 33 matches is set to run from 11 February, with a week break to fit in the Proteas’ three-match ODI series against England.
The SuperSport commentary team has assembled some of the most recognisable faces and voices in international cricket for its coverage.
The 16-strong team draws from an array of countries from South Africa, Australia, England, West Indies, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.
There will be six former South African cricketers offering their knowledge, including De Villiers, Boucher, Herschelle Gibbs, Shaun Pollock, Ashwell Prince and Vernon Philander.
Former England batter and SA-born Kevin Pietersen will also be behind the microphone, along with former West Indian captain Darren Sammy.
There are three women among them, all steeped in cricket experience: SA’s Kass Naidoo will be joined by former Pakistan captain Urooj Mumtaz and prominent Pakistan television personality Zainab Abbas.
Other members of the commentary line-up are Mark Nicholas, Darren Gough, Pommie Mbangwa and Mike Haysman.
Recently departed Proteas coach Boucher, who is now the coach of the Indian Premier League’s Mumbai Indians, will also be behind the microphone.
“We’ve pulled together a group that reflects the status of SA20 and the need to tell a fabulous South African story,” said Vukile Majola, head of cricket for SuperSport.
“They each bring a style all their own and are well suited to the explosive nature of T20 with its in-built entertainment.”
The SA20 will be breaking barriers in South African cricket as a record prize fund of R70 million will be awarded.
Earlier this month, Betway came in as title sponsor for the event as six co-owned Indian Premier League teams vie for the title: Durban’s Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Ticket prices will range from R50 to R200, with free entry for kids under six and scholars and pensioners eligible for a 30 percent discount.
Tickets for all 33 matches are available at the six stadiums and online through the Ticketpros website.
