Bulls assistant coach bemoans tactical approach against WP: 'We didn't kick enough'

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Bulls got it wrong with their tactics out on the field in their 31-7 loss to Western Province on Saturday.

That’s the view of assistant coach Hugo van As, who spoke to reporters after the game.

Van As said that the Bulls should have kicked more, but in chasing the game late on, they were forced to run, which saw Province profit from two intercept tries in the final quarter.

“Tactically, we didn’t kick enough today,” Van As said.

“We tried to run out of our own half and out of certain zones where we don’t want to run.

“Especially on a night like tonight, where they were rushing us defensively and putting our skills under pressure.

“We didn’t kick enough on the night.”

Van As didn’t think the Currie Cup loss would have much bearing on next week’s clash against the Stormers, with a place in the United Rugby Championship semi-finals to play for.

“We wanted to keep momentum in the team. It didn’t work out, but next week will be a new challenge,” he told reporters.

“The good thing about it is that they have all been here this week, and we will be in the same situation next week.

“So, there are a lot of positives to take out of the game, a lot of things that we know we need to fix.

“I am sure their full-strength URC team will benefit from tonight’s performance.”

Next week’s crunch match kicks off at 15:30 on Saturday.
