Cape Town Urges NERSA to Cancel Eskom Tariff Increase

Africa-Press – South-Africa. NERSA’s decision to increase energy tariffs to almost 9% annually for the next two years has sparked a national outcry.

The City of Cape Town has called on the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to scrap Eskom’s electricity tariff hike pending a full assessment of the power utility’s financials.

NERSA’s decision to increase energy tariffs from the original 5% to 6% to almost 9% annually for the next two years has sparked a national outcry.City Mayco Member for Energy Xanthea Limberg said NERSA should have scrapped the hike entirely, pending a full redetermination of Eskom’s multi-year price application.

“Instead, it has merely rubber stamped this additional Eskom tariff hike following the error that was made by NERSA. It is now public knowledge that Eskom is in a better financial position than forecast to NERSA based on actual interim financial results.”
