Chaos at Swallows as fed up players refuse to train after no salaries paid for months

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The players of DStv Premiership outfit Swallows FC have refused to train after not receiving their salaries since November, SAFPU deputy secretary-general Calvin Motloung confirmed on Monday.

“Players are not receiving their salaries at Swallows which is something that has been happening since November last year,” Motloung said as quoted by KickOff website.

“We did attend to that in the interest of the players, where we had a meeting with the club management with regards to the unpaid salaries.

“But the players suggested we give the club enough time; that was after the club promised to pay them. Now, there are players that have not been paid since December last year until today.

“Players came to me, and we did what we had to do. We wrote letters demanding the outstanding salaries be paid.”

Motloung revealed that he had a meeting with Dube Birds owner David Mogashoa and CEO Sipho Xulu regarding the club’s failure to pay player salaries.

The core reason for the club being unable to pay players their salaries has not been revealed by Mogashoa, who has since deactivated his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, the matter has since been referred to the Premier Soccer League, said Motloung of Safpu.

Swallows played to a 2-2 draw on Friday evening and were set for training on Saturday, but players refused to show up for the session.

“What happened is on Saturday, players refused to even train, because they are demanding their salaries,” Motloung continued.

“The management came to address them, they told them they will correct the situation.

“Today (Monday), the team is training in the afternoon, and the players have agreed among themselves that they are not going to train until they are paid.

“We know very well what’s happening at Swallows, and we are keeping our eyes and ears on the situation.

“The management of Swallows is meeting with the players again later today (Monday) at training.”

Relegation-threatened Swallows, who are putting up a stern fight to remain in South Africa’s top-flight, are currently 15th on the DStv Premiership standings.

Swallows are back in action on Saturday, 14 May against Chippa United in their penultimate league fixture.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
