Chiefs' Alexander ready to end trophy drought: 'We want to bring it home'

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Cole Alexander says that the Nedbank Cup will be a chance to end the club’s long wait for a major trophy since 2015.

With Chiefs being the favourites for the tie, Alexander does not think it will be an easy game despite their opponent’s recent struggles as they currently sit bottom of the table.

“There’s no easy games, everyone that is here deserves to be here and worked hard to be here,” Alexander said.

“There is quality with all teams. Maritzburg away is never easy but it’s a chance for us to get silverware. We are preparing well for each and every game and we are looking forward to it and for some silverware back to the village here.”

Despite achieving victories in the Carling Black Label Cup, AmaKhosi had not won any major silverware since the 2014/2015 season when former manager Stuart Baxter led them to the league title.

The 33-year-old says that signing for Chiefs has an expectation for trophies and the fans deserve to taste success once more.

“The expectation is there. It comes with the pressure and I think when we sign here (for Chiefs) it’s expected. We are all together, we are working hard and doing the best we can.

“We are preparing well so I think our fans deserve it and we want to bring it home for ourselves, for our families, but also for the fans.”

The recent departure of star player Njabulo Blom to MLS side St Louis City may have made the task more difficult for Chiefs, however, Alexander believes that young midfielder Samkelo Zwane has the quality to fill the shoes left by the recently departed Blom.

“Blom is an amazing pro, he is such a good player. It’s sad, that he left us but also happy for him that he is going overseas.

“On Zwane, the boy is good. The boy is quality. He shows that he can play in the PSL and many people know that this league is not about age, be it young or old.”

Alexander also had a personal message to the fans to let them know that he and his teammates are putting in the extra hours to bring the trophy home.

“We are in long hours, analysing, working in the gym, working on the field, so we putting in the hours. We all have the same goals, collectively we want to bring it home.”
