Africa-Press – South-Africa. Three former SABC board members have been ordered by the Gauteng High Court to cough up for signing off on an R11 million bonus paid to the broadcaster’s former chief operations officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
This after a protracted legal battle by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to get Motsoeneng to repay the money, which it found to have been an irregular payment made nine years ago.
The SIU has already seized Motsoeneng’s R6 million pension.
But now the court said that the former board members who approved a so-called “success fee”, Mbulaheni Maguvhe, Ndivhoniswani Tshidzumba, and Maleshane Raphela must cough up the rest of the money plus the interest calculated since the date of summons.
They awarded Motsoeneng the bonus after a deal was clinched with Multichoice, which was later set aside by the court.
“The SIU is committed to following all legal avenues to recover every cent lost by the SABC and ultimately, the South African public. We will now proceed to carry out this latest court order to ensure the recovery of these funds,” said SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago.
