Africa-Press – South-Africa. The City of Johannesburg is set to spend at least R1.2 million a year on remuneration for a deputy mayor.
This follows a council resolution to create the entirely new position.
The ANC’s proposal to establish the position was supported by majority of the parties in council on Thursday.
However, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economkic Freedom Fighters (EFF)rejected the proposal, while ACTIONSA abstained from the process.
However, a council document confirms the deputy mayor position will replace the finance portfolio.
This means the city will no longer have a Finance MMC, with the portfolio instead falling under the responsibility of the deputy mayor.
Anc regional leader Sasabona Manganye said that since the position will be phased out, part of the money will go towards paying the new deputy mayor of Johannesburg.
“The deputy mayor will be one of the ten MMCs. For en example, finance can be under the position of deputy mayor. So we would no longer have an MMC of finance. I don’t know what the additional cost would be.”
The ANC-led coalition will now have to decide who to appoint to the position.
