Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Democratic Alliance (DA) is heading into a pivotal leadership contest that could redefine the party’s future trajectory.
This after Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis officially entered the race for federal leader, in hopes of taking over from John Steenhuisen as party leader.
Hill-Lewis made the announcement at the Elsies River Civic Centre on Friday.
He positioned himself as a candidate focused on renewal and organisational strength ahead of the party’s next electoral battles.
In announcing his candidacy, Hill-Lewis said his decision to run was not taken lightly, acknowledging the significant responsibility that comes with leading South Africa’s second-largest party.
Hill-Lewis stressed that the April 11 federal congress will be more than just an internal election, it will be a defining moment for the party’s direction over the next three years.
Central to his campaign is a commitment to strengthening party structures and demonstrating governance success in DA-run municipalities.
“We must demonstrate that a DA in government is the best guarantor of more opportunity for more people, and more opportunity for more businesses so that our country can grow and flourish.”
With the race now officially open, the spotlight shifts to whether party members will back a message of renewal and consolidation as the DA prepares for its next political chapter.
