Disgraced Kannaland Mayor Jeffery Donson gets his mayoral chain back

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Disgraced Kanneland mayor Jeffery Donson could be wearing his mayoral chain again, this after a Western Cape High Court ruled in favour of him after he brought an application to have his motion of no confidence challenged.

Donson, a convicted child rapist, along with his former deputy, Werner Meshoa, a convicted fraudster, was ousted in the motion of no confidence. They were joined by a district representative on the municipality, Hyron Ruiters, of the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (ICOSA) party, who was also subjected to the motion of no confidence.

As a result ANC councillors Nicolaas Valentyn was appointed mayor and, Leoni Stuurman his deputy.

The court declared the occupation of Valentyn and Stuurman as unlawful, unconstitutional and null and void and be interdicted from occupying the office.

Judge Daniel Thulare further ruled: “What Valentyn and Stuurman were not entitled to do, was to disregard the guidance and authority of the Provincial structure of the ANC, ignore their expulsion and bar from representing the ANC, create their own rules and become loose, rebellious and loaded cannons in Kannaland randomly shooting in the name of the ANC.”

Thulare added the application to strike out the paragraphs related to the previous convictions and improper conduct of both Donson and Meshoa is dismissed.

Endless problems have beset the municipality since the municipal elections on 1 November. It came after Donson and Meshoa were elected into their positions. Last month, the ANC decided to cut ties with Icosa following public pressure.

The court also ordered Stuurman and Valentyn to pay the costs of the application.

The ruling comes just after the Western Cape High Court set aside the suspension of Stuurman and Valentyn declaring it unlawful.

They were suspended by the party after they went into agreements with other parties without a mandate from the ANC.

A media statement from Icosa read: “Accordingly, the Court Ordered that Donson and Meshoea continued occupation of the positions of Councillor, and also Mayor or Deputy Mayor of the third respondent from 30 January 2022 was unconstitutional, unlawful and invalid.”
