Doctor, ex-Sassa staffer allegedly 'recruited' able-bodied people to apply for disability grants

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Fifteen people, including a medical doctor and former South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) administrator, have been arrested in connection with disability grant fraud allegations.

Between June and November 2020, the doctor and the former social grants administrator, both based in Jane Furse in Limpopo, allegedly recruited members of the community to apply for disability grants even though they were not disabled, Hawks spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke said.

“It is further alleged that the doctor would certify on the application forms that the applicants were disabled and the former Sassa administrator would successfully process the applications.”

“According to the information, the first payments from Sassa to the applicants would be given to the doctor and the former administrator to share, while the other payments would be for the applicants,” Maluleke added.

The matter was reported to the Hawks and an investigation led to their arrests during a sting operation on Thursday.

They were warned to appear in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 1 March.

More arrests are expected to be made, according to Maluleke.
