Domestic row may have led to home being torched, police say after couple found dead

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A couple died in an inferno on Sunday after “domestic challenges” led to their home being torched.

Thovhowani Masakona, 35, and her partner Christopher Mudau, 38, were found in the torched house at Madimbo village in the Vhembe District.

Police say the couple were social workers at the Limpopo Department of Social Development.

In the statement, Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe “strongly warned people, especially those in relationships, to desist from resorting to violence when confronted by domestic challenges”.

Police say the incident happened in the morning when Mudau sent his son to buy petrol from a nearby petrol station to fill their generator.

The boy returned and was sent out to the shop to buy food.

When he came back, the boy found the house on fire.

The motive for the incident is yet to be determined, but police have not ruled out the possibility of domestic violence.

Police say the couple had fought the night before.

Hadebe said: “It is utterly inexcusable to continue losing lives in this fashion where individuals who find themselves in the midst of domestic challenges resort to extreme measures that involve taking lives.

“We urge all people in similar situations to seek professional assistance from relevant structures.”

An inquest docket has been opened, and investigations are under way.
