Africa-Press – South-Africa. A total of 56 bodies recovered from the recent flash floods in the Eastern Cape have been released to their families to begin burial preparations.
The official death toll currently stands at 88, with 83 victims positively identified through post-mortem examinations conducted by the provincial health department.
Torrential rains and flash floods, which began on Tuesday, have caused widespread destruction, damaging homes, roads, and other infrastructure across several parts of the province.
Search and rescue teams continue working around the clock to locate those who are still missing.
“The provincial government remains in close contact with affected families to provide the necessary psychosocial support and government has been providing emotional support to the bereaved families which has been bolstered by the South African Council of Churches,” said provincial government spokesperson Khusela Rantjie.
