Africa-Press – South-Africa. Spinner Bjorn Fortuin is knocking down the door for possible Proteas selection with his ongoing performances for the Paarl Royals in the SA20.
Fortuin has been one of Paarl Royals’ standout bowlers in their SA20 inaugural season thus far, capturing six wickets in four games.
On Tuesday at a scorching Paarl, Fortuin ripped through the Durban’s Super Giants top order as he delivered an outstanding opening spell, taking three for 14.
Fortuin, who has played three ODIs and 12 T20Is for the Proteas, claimed the wickets of Kyle Mayers (12 off 11), Quinton de Kock (0 off 2 balls), and Dwaine Pretorius (0 off 1 ball) to leave the visitors struggling on 29-3 in the powerplay.
Fortuin has shouldered the responsibility with the new ball and acknowledges experience has helped him strike up front.
“I’ve been doing it for a long time, it’s just simple game plans. The experience that I’ve held up, I’ve learned a few tricks over the years and I know what works for me and what doesn’t,” Fortuin told reporters on Tuesday.
“I try to stick to that as much as I can, it does reap its rewards, but it does have its risk as well.”
Fortuin has been in and out of Proteas’ favour, last making a one-day appearance in October in India. The SA20 has seen several players put their hand up for a possible national call-up as the Proteas usher in two new head coaches.
The Paarl Royals host the Sunrisers Eastern Cape on Thursday at Boland Park before hosting their final two home games over the weekend.
Fortuin says having World Cup-winning captains like Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan has only benefitted current skipper David Miller during the ongoing campaign.
“They’ve got a lot of experience that they can impart on us. They’re not the type of characters to sort of impose on his (Miller’s) space and and sort of dictate terms, but they do offer him a lot of advice and that filters through to us on the field,” said Fortuin.
“I haven’t played under David a lot as a captain, but what I can say is he is very tactically sound, and the advice that he gets from them does hold a lot of weight. They are World Cup winners.”
