Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have officially laid a criminal complaint against forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan for contempt of Parliament.
The move follows a dramatic turn of events during an Ad Hoc Committee meeting investigating police corruption, where O’Sullivan walked out before proceedings concluded.
The complaint was filed at the Cape Town Police Station earlier on Friday. The EFF’s action stems from yesterday’s session, during which O’Sullivan exited the meeting, stating he had a flight to catch.
The EFF contends that O’Sullivan walked out while still under oath and refused to continue providing evidence to the committee.
The party views this conduct as a direct violation of the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act.
EFF committee member Leigh-Ann Mathys emphasised the severity of the situation, noting that such actions carry significant legal weight.
Mathys explained that according to Section 17 of the Act, contempt of Parliament carries an offence equivalent to a crime, potentially resulting in imprisonment, a fine, or both.
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has noted the incident with concern.
Parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo reiterated the expectations placed on individuals summoned to testify before legislative bodies, stating that witnesses are expected to cooperate fully with proceedings and respect the authority of Parliament.
Didiza is currently awaiting a formal report from the Ad Hoc Committee.
