eThekwini municipal workers' go-slow delays waste collection, cleaning services in Durban

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Durban waste collection has been affected by an eThekwini municipal worker go-slow that staff are staging to protest against an overtime budget cut.

According to the municipality, employees at the Department of Cleansing and Solid Waste in some regions embarked on an illegal go-slow after the 50% overtime budget cut, which was implemented on Monday.

“This go-slow is impacting on waste collection and street sweeping services around the municipality,” the municipality said in a statement.

It added:

The DA’s deputy caucus leader in eThekwini, Mzamo Billy, said the cut “in exorbitant overtime spend” was supported by the DA.

According to Billy, “the system was being abused” and the cut followed a R150 million spend on overtime costs.

“It is common knowledge that the overtime payment system in the City has been abused and even left open to alleged political interference with no consequence management. Instead of ensuring that the city is clean, the overtime system seeks to foster a flawed incentive structure which is clearly bloating the cost of keeping the city clean,” Billy added.
