Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Mpumalanga traffic officer who solicited a R100 bribe from a motorist has been sentenced in the Middelburg Regional Court to five years behind bars for corruption.

Meshack Masenjwa, 37, was arrested in 2019 during an operation by undercover agents.

According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, information was received about a traffic officer who demanded money from motorists who contravened the National Road Traffic Act along the N4.

“On the day in question, the agent was driving next to Wonderfontein and was stopped by a traffic official who demanded a bribe of R100.

“The bribe was given to the agent and the transaction was recorded.”

Masenjwa was later arrested and charged with corruption.

He was sentenced last Wednesday.

Mpumalanga Hawks head Major General Zodwa Mokoena welcomed the sentence and applauded investigators and the prosecution team.

She warned corrupt officials that their days were numbered.
