For whom the shell tolls: Man bust with R3m in abalone given choice of prison time or R60k fine

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, or a R60 000 fine, after he pleaded guilty to the possession of more than R3 million worth of abalone.

Husaini Adam, 50, appeared in the Kroonstad Regional Court on Wednesday, following his arrest on 5 July by the Hawks.

This was after they received a tip-off about a person transporting abalone from the Free State to Gauteng.

Free State Hawks spokesperson, Captain Christopher Singo, said officers had followed the truck and stopped it at a filling station in Kroonstad.

Singo said:

“The abalone, the Tata truck, including R25 000 cash which was found in possession of the suspects, were all seized,” said Singo.

The court sentenced Adam to a fine of R60 000 or 10 years’ imprisonment. Half the fine or sentence was suspended for five years.

The cases against Adam’s co-accused – Johannes Myberg, 40; Fu Lin, 37; and Dasham Desram, 35 – were postponed to 17 December.

Lin and Desram are out on R10 000 bail, while Myberg remains in custody.
