Former veterinary clinic employee in court for multimillion-rand theft

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A former employee of a veterinary clinic in Humansdorp appeared in court on Tuesday in connection with the theft of more than R3 million.

Lana Nell, 45, was arrested by the Hawks’ Gqeberha-based Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation Unit on charges of fraud, alternatively theft.

The Hawks’ Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said R3.5 million was allegedly transferred from the facility into Nell’s account over a period of five years.

The transactions were allegedly made during the period between January 2018 and February 2023, when Nell was an employee working in the financial department of the clinic.

“Theft was suspected when one of the suppliers complained about a late payment. The matter was then reported to the Hawks for probing in February 2023,” Mgolodela said.

Nell remains in custody and a formal bail application will commence on 26 June.
