Found 'in a pool of blood': Probe launched after man falls from seventh floor of hospital

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Free State health department is probing the death of a man who fell from the seventh floor of the Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital building.

In the early hours of Friday, a security officer found the 33-year-old man “lying on the floor in a pool of blood in the corridor leading to the admissions office”, department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi.

He had been transferred to Pelonomi from Dr JS Moroka District Hospital on 17 July.

Patient found hanging from tree outside hospital after discharging himself

“The patient had sustained major burns to his face, neck, right shoulder and left hand,” Mvambi said.

He did not show any breathing complications, was not confused or suicidal, and was “fully conscious [and] interactive with ward staff”, Mvambi added.

However, at around 03:30, he fell from the seventh floor.

“The family were called to the hospital where a meeting was held with the family to inform them of the incident. The family accepted what happened and were offered psychosocial support. An independent investigation is currently under way by the police and forensic teams,” Mvambi said.
