Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Free State police officer has allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, before turning the gun on himself.
The incident happened on Sunday at police barracks.
Free State police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said the sergeant had been attached to the Sasolburg Visible Policing Unit.
He said the officer lived at the barracks next to the police station and that the incident had occurred when his 33-year-old “life partner” was visiting him.
“According to the information [we have], the member shot his life partner. The member himself was found with a gunshot wound in the head and his service pistol next to him. The police opened a case of murder and [an] inquest,” said Makhele.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate had not commented at the time of publication. Their response will be added once received.
Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, said she was “saddened by this incident”.
She encouraged members of the police to make use of “Employee Health and Wellness” support structures, which could assist and support them in resolving domestic issues.
