Africa-Press – South-Africa. International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola said there’s no guarantee the G20 leaders’ summit will produce a declaration when the bloc meets in South Africa in November.
South Africa will wrap up its year-long G20 presidency after more than 100 working group meetings on a range of shared global goals and concerns.
This includes talks on economic growth, trade reforms, ballooning debt, the Africa agenda, food security, energy security and climate change.
At the end of every G20 presidency, the bloc hopes to agree on a communique on all agreed decisions.
With some differences of opinion among G20 member states, Lamola admitted that achieving consensus may be a tall order.
“All countries need to agree on the declaration – it’s a consensus-based organisation. There have been some of the working groups that did not have a declaration, so we are beginning to accept that that could also be a possibility for the leaders’ summit.”
But Lamola doesn’t believe this will water down the bloc’s ambitious outcomes.
“We are looking forward to the outcomes that will speak to the Global South and also shine a spotlight on the African continent, the transformation of the international financial architecture and financing for development.”
