Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Gauteng Education Department has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality, inclusive and responsive education by addressing several pressing issues, including school infrastructure, learner safety and specialised nutrition support.

The department’s self-build programme, designed to alleviate capacity concerns, is currently active in 415 public schools.

Through the programme, funds are allocated to identified schools in high-pressure areas, enabling them to build additional classrooms to expand their capacity.

It has reported on zero construction or completion delays, noting that work commences upon municipal approval of building plans.

The department has reported that at Vulindlela Secondary School in Orange Farm, a conditional assessment was done following infrastructure concerns.

While the general building project was finished in November last year, procurement is underway for significant repairs, including ceilings, doors and electrical work.

The department is also addressing a disturbing incident where community members assaulted learners at Soshanguve South Secondary School last month.

It says the affected learners are receiving counselling, and assistance is also being provided for police case registration.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona said, “We have investigated this matter and our findings dictate that action must be taken against the SGB, and also necessary action will be instituted against the principal of the school.”

The department has further emphasised its ongoing commitment to addressing educational challenges, saying it has prioritised well-resourced learning environments across the province.
