GBV complaint leads to arrest of couple in connection with R36 million theft case

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 28-year-old assault complainant was arrested over the weekend, along with her 43-year-old boyfriend who she accused of attacking her.

The arrest was made after the Hawks discovered that allegedly stolen money had sparked a fight between the couple.

It is alleged that R36 million had been stolen from the FNB account of a deceased man.

Limpopo Hawks spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, said that FNB employee Thabiso Matenda opened a bank profile without authorisation for a client the day after the client died in a car accident.

Matenda was allegedly working with a syndicate and a total of R36 989 051.67 was stolen from the deceased man’s bank account. It is believed that some of the money was donated to a church.

Matenda resigned and was arrested the following month. He was later denied bail.

According to Maluleke, another member of the syndicate allegedly gave R6 million to the woman and her boyfriend who are now in custody. However, a fight broke out between them when they were later asked to send it back.

“When the girlfriend went to the police in Johannesburg to open a case of assault against her boyfriend, the police discovered that the money they were fighting for was actually stolen and Limpopo Hawks were investigating the matter,” Maluleke said.

He added that they already returned R5.5 million of the R6 million.

The couple was arrested on Saturday and is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
