Godongwana Announces Temporary R3 Fuel Levy Cut

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The reduction in the price of fuel announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is set to be for a month.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a temporary cut to the general fuel levy earlier on Tuesday.

Government has reduced the levy by three rand per litre, following talks between the National Treasury and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources aimed at easing pressure on consumers while maintaining a stable fuel supply.

The move forms part of a broader package to support households and key sectors of the economy.

The decision came just ahead of a R3.06 per litre increase in petrol prices for both grades.

The intervention follows rising global oil prices, driven by escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has increased pressure on local fuel costs.

The general fuel levy on petrol will drop from R4.10 to R1.10 per litre, while diesel will decrease from R3.93 to 93 cents per litre, both for one month.

These figures exclude other charges, including the road accident fund and carbon fuel levies.

Speaking in Sandton, Godongwana says the measure will be reviewed monthly over the next two months.

“The only thing we can influence is the fuel levy. Now there are people who are spreading incorrect information, which thinks that as the price of fuel increases, the fuel levy also increases that’s not true.”

National Treasury says the relief measure is designed to be fiscally neutral.

Government will introduce mechanisms to recover the estimated R6 billion in lost revenue within the fiscal framework approved in the 2026 budget.
