Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Groote Schuur Hospital Trust said it was overwhelmed by the financial support it had received to cover emergency surgery costs at the hospital.

Last week, EWN reported that the trust had raised R300,000 and needed another R1.8 million to provide more resources for surgeries in the hospital’s trauma centre.

The hospital said it currently had two operating theatres, and the money would allow for more people to be recruited to fill the empty theatres to do more surgeries.

The hospital added that it usually operated on at least 25 patients a day, however, this number doubled during long weekends and public holidays.

Groote Schuur Hospital Trust executive director, Kristy Evans, said they were grateful that a foundation had come onboard to cover the remaining R1.8 million.

“We really want to thank Lotto Star, who is the business who came up with the remaining of the funding we needed for year one, and we are just completely blown away by the partnership and care that they have shown for our public hospital system and the patients in the Western Cape.”

Evans said they were still looking for more donations to cover costs for another year.

“There’s a lot of other private individuals who gave through our website and who made EFTs to the trust, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude. We are still looking for year two funding, so we are still hoping for another R2.1 million so we can provide this service for not just one year but for at least two years.”
