Hawks arrest unregistered dentist at Polokwane medical practice

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 42-year-old man made an appearance at Polokwane Magistrate’s Court after he was allegedly found practicing as a dentist while not registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said Chihoho Taurai was a Zimbabwean national who was in the country illegally.

“The accused was working at a medical practice registered in Polokwane,” she said.

“As a result, he contravened Section 17(1) of the Health Professions Act, 56 of 1974. He was also charged with illegal immigration Act (sic).

“Members of the public are encouraged to report all suspected illegal practices by unregistered persons.”

Taurai had allegedly been working at a practice which is registered under another doctor’s name since September 2022.

The Hawks arrested him on Wednesday after receiving information from the HPCSA “about someone who was allegedly practising as a medical doctor without the licence in Polokwane”.

“The team tactically visited the surgery and found the suspect treating patients as if allowed by the law. After failing to produce the licence to practice as a medical doctor, the suspect was placed under arrest,” Limpopo Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Matimba Maluleke said.

The matter was postponed to 15 June for further investigation.

Taurai will remain in custody.
