Hawks seize documents in fraud investigation into Cradock landfill contract

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Hawks have swooped in on an East London company implicated in a R12 million fraud case.

The engineering firm was awarded a contract by the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape to conduct a feasibility study of landfills in the Middelburg and Cradock areas. However, the contracts were reportedly never completed, said Hawks spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela.

The Hawks declined to name the company because it was a sensitive and ongoing investigation.

Hawks seize documents connected to R26m fraud probe at municipality in Cradock

A whistleblower reported the matter to the Hawks last year. This prompted an investigation into allegations of fraud and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.

On Wednesday, officers raided the company’s offices and seized documents and equipment.

Mgolodela said:

The municipality has been in the spotlight over fraud allegations before.

In September 2020, the Hawks raided the municipality’s offices as part of an investigation into a R26 million fraud and corruption case.

The investigation related to the alleged flouting of procurement processes in awarding tenders for road construction, maintenance projects and the design of a community hall.
