Africa-Press – South-Africa. Proteas skipper Dean Elgar was understandably elated following his side’s dominant victory over England in the first Test at Lord’s, but he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.
The innings and 12-run victor came inside three days and gives South Africa a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The Proteas bossed proceedings from start to finish, delivering a Test performance that was as clinical as they come.
The bowling unit was particularly impressive, and the Proteas are now well set to launch a charge at bagging what would be an incredible series victory.
Top of the ICC Test championship, the Proteas have not lost a series in the format since Elgar was named full-time captain, while the side continues to take steps in the right direction under coach Mark Boucher.
Elgar, though, says it is important for the players not to read too much into the first Test result and that he expects even more from his charges.
“By no means is this the end product,” he said in his post-match press conference on Wednesday.
“I need them to get better and to want to achieve more. I think once they buy into that, which I’m sure they’re doing with great victories like this.
“I don’t think the players should be looking into it too much. You’ve got to play every game for a Test side like it’s your last game, and that’s my kind of mantra. We’ve played good cricket, and that reflects in our ranking. It’s a reflection on the individuals, our brand of cricket.
“Everything has been a work in progress since I took over the captaincy, but I always felt the core of the group always had the fundamentals of one day becoming a world-known Test side.
“Over the last year I’d like to think that what we’ve laid down has been pretty true and pretty solid. It hasn’t been fake. It’s been real and hasn’t been something I feel is far-fetched. It’s been our team goal I have with the coaches, and it’s pretty realistic.
