Africa-Press – South-Africa. Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged municipalities to strengthen their accountability systems to prevent repeated incidents of maladministration.
Delivering the closing address at the local government in Midrand on Friday, Hlabisa stressed the need for municipalities to take decisive steps in tackling corruption.
The gathering brought together national and local government officials to deliberate on solutions to the challenges facing municipalities.
Hlabisa said municipalities must be proactive in addressing their challenges.
“We have particularly focused on the importance of depoliticising administration, strengthening accountability mechanisms, professionalising leadership, and ensuring effective citizen partnerships. These are not structural ideas but practical imperatives that will determine whether our local government can deliver services efficiently.”
