IEC AIMS TO HOST 80K COMMUNITY EVENTS TO GET SOUTH AFRICANS TO VOTE IN 2024

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Aimed at getting citizens to the ballot to cast their votes in 2024’s general elections, the commission on Tuesday said these engagements would focus on voter and ballot education.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has set a target of hosting 80,000 community events aimed at getting South Africans to the ballot to cast their votes in 2024’s general elections.

Its chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo, announced on Tuesday during the launch of the IEC’s 2024 national and provincial elections programme that these engagements would focus on voter and ballot education.

A date is yet to be set for the polls.

Mamabolo said they already had 2,500 field workers who joined the municipal outreach coordinators and democracy education facilitators, responsible for civic education across the different communities.

While there was great concern over youth participation, Mamabolo said the commission tailored some of its campaigns to address that issue.

“So that we reach out to the much-needed youth, we have once again developed content for the youth on digital platforms, including a series of animation videos, audio recordings, social media tool kits, infographics and fact sheets.”
