Kokstad Mayor Bhekinkosi Mtolo resigns to take up KwaZulu-Natal ANC post

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Kokstad Mayor Bhekinkosi Mtolo has resigned from his post at the KwaZulu-Natal municipality after being elected ANC provincial secretary.

Mtolo confirmed the resignation to News24, saying it would come into effect on 31 August.

In a letter addressed to the municipal speaker, which News24 has seen, Mtolo said he was unable to continue his mayoral duties as the ANC position was full-time.

“I leave this position with mixed feelings, since I joined the Greater Kokstad municipal political leadership in May 2011. It has been a journey of hardship, a commitment to serve our people selflessly guided by the principles, values and the vision of the ANC of building a united, non-racial, non-sexist, and prosperous national democratic society,” he added.

He said serving the municipality had been a “great honour”.

He said:

Mtolo has been an advocate for scrapping the ANC’s step-aside rule, which dictates that members in elected positions who face criminal charges should step down.

He previously told News24 the party in KwaZulu-Natal wanted the policy scrapped and would challenge the matter at the ANC’s December elective conference, where the party would pass its final policies.

Mtolo made headlines in June when he reportedly lashed out at municipal officials who were unreachable on their cellphones after hours.

According to the Witness, Mtolo said officials should realise that they were public servants and needed to be reachable for service delivery matters at all times.
