KwaMashu residents score free cash after robbers attack G4S van from Bridge City Shopping Centre

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A G4S cash vehicle was robbed shortly after collecting money at Bridge City Shopping Centre in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday evening.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police, an unknown number of suspects travelling in two vehicles along Khumzana Road opened heavy fire at the van and forced the driver and guards to stop the truck.

“The driver and his crew were allegedly forced out of the vehicle and robbed of their firearms before the suspects blew up the cash truck,” KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.

He said a case of armed robbery, attempted murder and malicious damage to property was being investigated.

No one was injured in the incident.

Prem Balram of Reaction Unit SA, a privately owned first responders organisation, said the suspects fled the scene before they or the police arrived.

“The public was in the process of stealing money that was left behind by the suspects,” he said.

Wednesday’s was the fourth cash-in-transit heist reported in KwaZulu-Natal in as many months.

In June, a security guard was ambushed and robbed of cash and his firearm after collecting money from a supermarket in the Tongaat area.

In May, a woman was killed after being caught in the crossfire during a cash-in-transit heist in Umlazi, in the south of Durban. Three other people, including a police officer, were injured.

In April, three security guards were wounded after their cash van was ambushed on Dumisani Makhaye Road between KwaMashu and KwaDabeka.
