Africa-Press – South-Africa. A teacher, aged 28, was shot dead at Riverdene Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday morning.

The KwaZulu-Natal education department said the teacher was ambushed by unknown assailants, who fled the scene immediately afterwards.

Paramedics said the teacher had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and was transferred to hospital in a critical condition.

“The teacher was rushed to hospital for medical care, but was later declared dead,” the department said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “He was shot on the head by three unknown suspects. The suspects fled the scene in their black getaway vehicle,” Gwala said.

A murder case was opened.

Police are still investigating, but the department is hoping the perpetrators will soon be brought to book.

KwaZulu-Natal’s Education MEC, Kwazi Mshengu, said: “We send our sincere condolences to the family and friends during this very sorrowful moment and wish them peace, comfort, courage and lots of love at this time of bereavement.”
