Africa-Press – South-Africa. KwaZulu-Natal’s disaster management teams are monitoring weather patterns closely, as heavy downpours are expected to hit the province over the next two days.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning and heavy rain, which may lead to localised flooding.

Large parts of the disaster-prone province are expected to be affected from Saturday through to Monday.

Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said: “COGTA MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has assured residents that the provincial Disaster Management Centre is working closely with all relevant stakeholders – including municipalities, the South African National Roads Agency Limited, and provincial departments – to ensure that adequate measures are in place to respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise, especially on major routes.”

Mzila said motorists and residents are urged to take extra precautions and follow safety measures.

“Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when travelling, especially at night, and to avoid crossing low-lying bridges and flooded roads. Motorists are also urged to reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance during adverse weather conditions.”
